As far back as I can remember, I have always had a passion for art. When I was a kid I discovered that a box of crayons and a few markers could turn my imagination into my idea of reality. The more I drew, people noticed. My teachers, parents, and grandparents encouraged this type of creativity and for that I am forever grateful. During my adolescence my artistry took a new path. When you come of age I think that one can have so many fresh points of view; that was how I sorted life out. I became a big class doodler, then would also continue to draw at home late into the night. I put a lot of teenage angst and awkwardness into my work. My sketches became a social and emotional tool for me. My work simply became an extension of myself.
Fast forwarding to my adult experience, I have dabbled in many different fields and medias: Graphic Design, Illustration, Set Design, Interior Design, Painting, Photography, etc. both in and out of college. I still enjoy trying new things, but I always come back to the basics: just plain 'ol drawing. A graphite pencil, paper, and a little composition are my first love.
My influences are diverse. I adore ancient Egyptian and Renaissance work. I think there is real power in those creations due to the dedication and belief behind them. On the other hand, I am in awe of new school modern art. It takes a certain vision to be able to bend and contort perspective and make unnatural color seem so real.
Lastly, I still am drawn to the human figure no matter what. In 2000, I started my tattoo apprenticeship in coastal North Carolina. I have realized that more toilsome my apprenticeship was, the better and more respectable artist I am for it. It wasn't an easy road, however, it was an opportunity I am grateful to have been given. A couple years later I slowed down my pace to focus on custom work and continue learning from a new mentor; ended up getting into management. Finally in the summer of 2004, I returned to my hometown of Omaha, NE and entered a top of the line shop, Big Brain Productions. After meeting renowned Chris Blinston and Joseph "Smitty"Smith things immediately seemed to fall into place; the vacation turned into a permanent position. All the artists at BBP are beyond talented, eager to collaborate, and the best thing of all: modest. It was at Big Brain that I decided to plant my feet and start blooming. Since I gave my first tattoo, my career and life in general became a roller coaster. I rubbed shoulders with several inspiring, talented, and unusual people. Whether it is an artist or a client they share knowledge and experiences with me that forever shape and push my imagination. I truly feel fortunate that clients from all walks of life come to meet me and to share their visions and life choices. I don't have to travel the world to develop knowledge. You could say it comes to me. I once read: work and fun are opposites by definition. What you do for your job is called work; the rest of the time you can do what you want, and that is called play. How lucky can I be that I get to do both at once?
Currently I stay booked a few days to a few months out depending on the season. However, I always accept requests for custom illustrations with a deposit. I travel bi-monthly around the US to improve my skills and compete in tattoo competitions. You may check the site for updates on convention appearances. Please contact the Big Brain front desk to set any appointments or consultations. Unfortunately, due the volume of requests I cannot set appointments online. I will do my best to return your questions or comments in a timely manner.
Character defines true beauty. I believe you should only judge someone based on what you know of them personally. I work in an environment where people choose to alter their appearances and as a result, I have seen their view of the world change. Fortunately, I've noticed a decline in tattoo prejudice since there has been more mainstream exposure, but it will never disappear completely. I only hope tattooing can widely be embraced as a legitimate art form.
Integrity is a first and foremost for any artist I respect. Honest, humble, and dedicated individuals are the people who pave the way in the industry for others. In my experience, I found one thing to ring true: if you act like an ass: you are an ass. I think people forget the basics they learn in kindergarten. It's simple. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
